TRANSCRIPT

[SCENE NOTE: The scene takes place in ‘The Rails’ - a trendy Arcadian restaurant. Evan and Ella are sitting at a table, ‘enjoying’ each others company over lunch.]

FADE IN

EVAN

[Evan is still trying to swallow his food as he starts bragging]

“Okay. Okay… So I don’t want to rub it in or anything but is this really good or does food just taste better when someone else is paying? I mean in general? Or do you think my ‘rightness’ is giving it some extra zestiness?”

ELLA

“You’re just SO humble, Evan. Let’s talk some more about how great you are! Also ‘rightness’ isn’t a word.”

EVAN

“Do you remember? When we were scanning that video and you were so sure it was a body that fell out of that barge? Then you bet me lunch? You should probably listen to me more often.”

ELLA

“You’re so ugly right now.”

EVAN

“I’m too happy to be ugly, Ella.”

ELLA

“Whatever, can we talk about something else or should I just leave you alone with yourself? Talking about how great you are.”

EVAN

“I’m JOKING. I’m joking, Ella! Are you kidding me? I’m not going to believe you’re actually upset right now. If the shoe was on the other foot you’d totally do this to me.”

ELLA

“I wouldn’t.”

EVAN

“Oh really?”

ELLA

“Yeah. Also I hate that saying.”

EVAN

“You hate ‘If the shoe was on the other foot’?”

ELLA

“It’s stupid. It’s supposed to be about advantage and disadvantage but it’s not like your feet are in competition with one another, living independently from the body. They’re still your feet and one is still without a shoe, so it sucks no matter what foot the shoe is on. Even ‘the grass is greener on the other side’ makes more sense and there isn’t even any grass in Neo-Atlantis.”

EVAN

“You know you’re taking the fun out of this. It’s only a metaphor.”

ELLA

“Look, Evan. You see this right?”

EVAN

“Yeah. How Ace are these tattoos, by the way? We’re legit now. Real mercs. I’m still processing it all to be honest.”

ELLA

“Right? So now that you’re done ‘gloating’ for a second can we acknowledge how amazing this all is? Sidenote: Jonny really stuck her neck out for us with the Hub.”

EVAN

“Yeah she did…. But are we not even going to mention how we almost died out there?”

ELLA

“Yup. But we didn’t. Wanna know why?”

EVAN

“I think I can see where this is going.”

ELLA

“No matter how stupid you are or how frustrated you make me… I would never let foot-you not have a shoe.”

EVAN

“That’s not where I thought this was going.”

ELLA

“You don’t get it. You’re no good to me without a shoe, Evan. I was thinking about it; when Nick was tattooing the marker on you and I was holding your hand so that you didn’t cry.”

EVAN

“What!? I wasn’t going to cry!”

ELLA

“Ummm, yeah you were. Anyway. I don’t ever want to be without you. If we weren’t together on that job we’d be dead right now. For sure. We need each other.”

EVAN

“You don’t… Look. We did this together. Is that what you need to hear from me? It’s you and me against this city. For keeps. You’re like… my sister, Ella.”

ELLA

“I like that. Accepted. We’re family now.”

[Ella snatches Evan’s food from his plate, popping the last bite into her mouth]

EVAN

“Hey! I wasn’t finished with that! Come on, Ella. That’s the last… bite. That was the last bite.”

ELLA

“Family shares. Besides that was for being a jerk. And also for making me use your dumb metaphor to get my point across. AND for forcing me to talk about my feelings when you should already know all this stuff to begin with.”

EVAN

“Okay, okay! So what do we do now? In a general now-that-our-lives-have-changed and we have five chips kind of way.”

ELLA

“I… don’t know. I guess I haven’t really had time to think about it? We should probably stick with Jonny though. She takes care of us. That’s a better deal then our last gig by ALOT.”

[The conversation takes a more serious turn with the mention of ‘the last gig’, both Evan and Ella are uncomfortable at the prospect of clearing their debt with Derby Bell.]

EVAN

“About our last partner. We should tie up loose ends, you know. Now that we’re going pro.”

ELLA

“I don’t want to… She kind of scares me.”

EVAN

“You know it’s not gonna go away. If word gets out that we’re official now…”

[Ella finds some sudden resolve, wanting to rip the proverbial band-aid off.]

ELLA

“So… Okay. Do you want to make the call or should I?”

EVAN

“Can we… can we do it together?”

ELLA

“We’re two feet on the same person. We don’t ever have to do anything alone again if you don’t want to.”

EVAN

“Why? Why the shoe thing again?”

ELLA

“It’s basically the worst. Like you. But I made you smile. So, I win.”
